| Mike Sweeney says he's signed with A's
Maybe this team can be sneaky-competitive this season if the cards fall the right way. Here's why. The team is now set up to platoon at three different positions this year. (Third base, right field and DH. And kind of at catcher, too, if Bowen mostly starts against righties.) Chavez, Ryan Sweeney (man there are a lot of duplicate names on this team right now) and Cust will all post significantly better numbers if they're not exposed to lefties too often, while Murphy, Brown and Mike Sweeney (sounds like Candace Bergen's law firm) are all good against lefty pitching. If the starting rotation comes together fast enough, I actually think the A's could steal a weak AL West. USS Mariner ran a sim last week which showed Oakland as (get this) the favorites in the division, although it didn't account for injury.

We got a call from Jim Twite of Brewster this morning that the Cumberland Farms near Route 28 and Bank Street, AND the Harwich Gas at 435 Route 28, Harwichport next to the 400 Club, are both selling regular for $2.29. The price is $2.32 on Rte 6 in Wareham, at both Lukoil and with the hippies... who now have a bedsheet hanging up in their office with "There Goes The Neighborhood " written on it. I love those people. 7-11 in Wareham, $2.32.... same with Exxon at the Buzzards Bay rotary.... ya know, the rotary that used to have the tugboat. $2.51 at the Citgo near the Christmas Tree Shop in Sagamore.... $2.65 at the Citgo on 28 South in Bourne.... $2.64 at the Citgo on 28A, Bourne/Falmouth line, with $2.89 diesel for all you mothertruckers.
Tiger Direct lists the Toshiba HD-A3 for $129.99
Even with all the recent announcements, HD-DVD is still selling 38% of the market, same as they've been doing the past several months. This fire sale could really make things interesting. All it needs to do is hang in another year. By then there'll be so many players out there the market will be too big to can no matter how well Blu Ray is doing. .
Utah looking to get over the hump in 2008
They received the 2006 Commissioner's Award as the AFL's best organization and support staff. They have made two playoff appearances in a row and are recognized as an exciting and explosive offensive team, but now they need to take the next step and become an elite team. Coaches and front office Arena Hall of Fame head coach Danny White is the face of this organization. He has built the franchise from the ground up and he not only coaches but also oversees personnel decisions. He leans on his personnel director and line coach Ron James, though, who has a reputation as a great teacher. Arena legend Hunkie Cooper runs the defense and Lindsay Hassell coaches the DL/LB, while Scott Lieber handles the special teams. White is a great offensive playcaller and he has assembled a solid teaching staff in Utah.
Richard Roberts: God said to resign
Richard Roberts told Oral Roberts University students Wednesday that God spoke to him last Thursday — and told him to resign. Students cheered and cried as Roberts spoke for a few minutes at the school's chapel service Wednesday, five days after he resigned as the school's president. Roberts said that God told him to step down. He said he initially resisted the instructions, but God told him that if he would resign, the school would be blessed ‘‘supernaturally.'' Roberts resigned Friday. On Tuesday, Yukon businessman Mart Green promised the school up to $70 million, more than enough to erase the school's debt. Roberts was under pressure to step down after three former professors sued ORU and alleged excessive spending on the part of the Roberts family.
Le Roc du Nord?
There are striking parallels between the manner in which the crisis at Northern Rock unfolded and the descent into chaos at Société Générale - not least the blatant evidence of the failure of internal risk management and of external regulatory control. But there are, of course, equally obvious differences. The Newcastle-based mortgage lender was bailed out by the government to the tune of £55bn in loans and guarantees after its board, as a central strategy, endorsed an excessively high-risk loan policy and exposed the bank to the US sub-prime residential market - and ministers are now trying to engineer a private sector takeover after rejecting nationalisation, finally. SocGen is now being made ready by the hyperactive Sarkozy government, which has similarly turned away the option of state control, for takeover by a domestic rival or rivals to create an all-French mega-bank.
