Clive Thompson on How DIYers Just Might Revive American Innovation
What a mess. I'm sitting on the floor of my apartment, surrounded by electronic parts, a cigar box, a soldering gun, and stray bits of wire. I'm trying to build my own steampunk-style clock — hacking a couple of volt meter dials to display hours and minutes. It'll look awesome when it's done. If it ever gets done — I keep botching the soldering. A well-soldered joint is supposed to look like a small, shiny volcano. My attempts look like mashed insects, and they crack when I try to assemble the device. Why am I so inept? I used to do projects like this all the time when I was a kid. But in high school, I was carefully diverted from shop class when the administration decided I was college-bound. I stopped working with my hands and have barely touched a tool since.
Fog, flooding watches in place
Heavy rainfall is possible Tuesday, and the weather service says that melting snow and nearly frozen soil could result in flooding along some waterways and in low-lying areas. Current conditions http://www.journalgazette.net/ If flooding begins in your area The state recommends: - Get to higher ground if possible. - Evacuate your house if flooding is possible. - Know your town and make sure you know alternate escape routes in case one is blocked. - Take pets with you if you evacuate. However, many shelters usually do not allow pets inside due to sanitary conditions, so plan accordingly. - Do not try to drive through water. As little as 2 feet can cause most cars to float, and as little as a few inches of moving water can wash most cars away with the current.

Clearly, some investors wonder whether the deal, which will saddle Macrovision with lots of debt, is a case of a company biting ... .
Open Mike: Blame NFL rules, not Ricky
Nor am I taking anything back. He was a member of Team USA then, and as such had an obligation to his team and his country to behave and compete in a manner that brought pride to all. When you're a member of a team, you sacrifice something of your own ego for the good of all. You might even sacrifice a few beers to the common good. I always liked the way he went about his sport. He didn't follow anyone's rules, never played it safe, never backed out of an event to save wear and tear on his body and maybe increase his chances of winning the World Cup, which he did in 2005. He was and is the quintessential American individualist, raised in a cabin near Franconia, N.H. without indoor plumbing or electricity. Somehow, he grew to maturity without the benefit of television and the Internet.
